The entire country is lockdown. People have to stay at home for 21 days. In this house arrest, if you are spending your time watching videos on platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Hotstar, and YouTube, then this news is for you.
All OTT (over the top) platforms in India have decided. During the lockdown, they will stream video in SD ie standard definition on the mobile network. This decision is only for streaming on cellular networks. Not for broadband users. That is, if you watch videos from mobile networks, then HD will not be seen in high definition videos.
But the biggest question is why is this happening?
People are doing social distancing. The houses are closed. In such a situation, the use of the Internet has increased. This use of the Internet has had a direct impact on the system and structure of the cellular network. Keeping this in mind, video streaming platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, Hotstar have decided to reduce streaming quality on cellular networks. That means high definition (HD) and ultra high definition (ultra-HD) streaming quality is going to end, the speed will also be up to 480p.
These decisions star and Disney India chairman Uday Shankar, Sanjay Gupta (Google India), Ajit Mohan (Facebook India), Puneet Goenka (Zee Entertainment Enterprises), NP Singh (Sony Pictures Network), Sudhanshu Vats (Viacom18), Gaurav Gandhi ( Amazon Prime Video), Nikhil Gandhi (TikTok), Ambika Khurana (Netflix), Karan Bedi (MX Player) and Varun Narang (Hotstar) have been taken in the meeting. The meeting took place through video conferencing.
A press release has also been released after the meeting, which you can see below.
The government and telecom operators are worried that total lockdown could have a profound impact on the cellular network infrastructure. The digital industry is fully aware of this challenge and ensures all citizens that the mobile network will be fully accessible to them at all times.
That is, companies have agreed that they will bring their video streaming quality HD or ultra HD HD to SD (standard definition) speed immediately.
Earlier, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI (which represents Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea) had asked 12 video streaming platforms in the country to work on reducing the streaming quality. COAI had also reached out to the Telecom Department on this issue.
At the same time, Google has made this change in its streaming quality a week ago. For users all over the world. Last week a Google spokesperson said,
During this challenge, we are working closely with governments and network operators around the world to reduce the load on the system.
Overall the objective is that everyone can get the internet without any problem.
