Just a slap. But can’t kill.
The trailer of Taapsee Pannu’s movie ‘Thappad’ has arrived. The trailer begins with a reference to Section 9 of the Hindu Marriage Act. In which a woman or a man can break marriage without any reason or argument. Taapsee wants to end her marriage on the basis of this section. Because the reason she wants to divorce her husband is very common in the eyes of the world. Just a slap, which her husband kills her at the party, among many.
In the trailer, when Taapsee’s lawyer finds out the reason for the divorce, she is surprised to say-
So just a slap
In response to this, she says-
Just a slap, but can’t kill.
In the eyes of the world, a very normal thing in a relationship is not normal for them. After a slap, she decides to end her marriage. After this, they have to convince their parents, their husband and his parents, even his own lawyer. In the trailer she says-
With that one slap, I started seeing all the unfamiliar things which I was ignoring and moving on.
A dialogue in this 2.54-minute trailer reminds you of a year-ago contraceptive film that glorified violence on women. The dialog is-
Sir beatings are also a way of expressing love.
Three superhit films have come on this one line. ‘Arjun Reddy’ (2017), ‘Kabir Singh’ (2019) and ‘Aditya Verma’ (2019). Hero-heroine dominates in all three films. Tortures him, threatens him, fills him with a self-doubt, ‘slaps’ him.
In the story, that slap is justified by the heroine’s mistake, bad situation and the hero’s anger. In real life, it takes responsibility to justify it, ‘Kabir Singh’ and ‘Arjun Reddy’ director Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Sandeep is the popular director of Telugu films. In an interview to Anupama Chopra, Sandeep said-
When you are in love with a woman (or a woman or a man) and are more connected, there is a lot of honesty in it. If you are not physically expressing yourself, if you do not have the freedom to slap each other, I see nothing there. Preeti slapped Kabir (the main character of the film ‘Kabir Singh’) unnecessarily, Kabir at least had a reason. If you can’t slap your wife and girlfriend when you want, can’t touch, kiss, I can’t see any emotion there. This cannot be true love.
He was criticized for glorifying violence against heroines in the film. But he tried to justify his thinking and film in different statements. In this interview to Anupama Chopra, she said-
Perhaps he has never felt love in the right way. This is new for them. As far as the Telugu film (Arjun Reddy) is concerned, people critiqued different things related to the film there. But here people have just sat holding the Feminist side. They do not talk about anything else. Maybe they hate me.
Vijay Devarkonda played the lead role in ‘Arjun Reddy’. So they were also asked questions on the slapping scene. The answer he gave in an interview to the film companion was not very different from Sandeep’s answer. They said-
Things are going bad everywhere. Pollution, water, people, policy, behavior of people, according to me, there is evil everywhere, so will making good films fix all this? No. I am swinging between these two things right now that I want to do this kind of film and what is the social responsibility of this film? The entire responsibility of improving society cannot be imposed on cinema.
There is a couple who loves each other very much. I am not justifying the film, but it is possible that a boy and a girl are comfortable with each other. Make love They can kill each other a little bit, so I don’t think they are wrong. But if you have seen domestic violence in childhood. Or you have seen your mother beating your father, then you may find ‘Arjun Reddy’ or ‘Kabir Singh’ bad films.
From actor to director, we believe that slap is also an expression of love. But in reality it is slapping or eating, domestic violence or suffering. To understand this, both of them should watch the movie ‘Slap’ first.
